LGBT efforts help build Humana’s culture

A successful organization needs an inspiring, well-defined culture.

A recent Deloitte study found that culture and engagement top the list of challenges for companies. Tim Huval, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Humana, said, “You get the company culture you are willing to accept, so why not only accept the best?

In light of various legislative proposals at the state level, Humana would like to reaffirm our belief in having a diverse and inclusive workplace. Humana’s commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality is a big part of our success. Thriving Together and Cultivating Uniqueness are central elements of our core values.

We strive to live our values every day. Recently, Humana earned the top designation of ‘Best Place to Work’ for LGBT equality given by the Human Rights Campaign. For the fourth year in a row, Humana received a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2016 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

The 2016 CEI rated 1,027 businesses in the report, which evaluates LGBT-related policies and practices, including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs, and public engagement with the LGBT community. Humana’s score reflects a commitment to LGBT workplace equality, with respect to tangible policies, benefits, and practices.

“We have received very positive feedback from our LGBT associates,” said Roger Cude, Enterprise Vice President, Human Resources at Humana. “They appreciate the ability to be themselves at work and are proud to be part of an inclusive work environment.”

This year, Humana added new benefits for LGBT associates and their families. The job-protected leave policy was updated to include same-sex spouses and domestic partners and means that an associate who needs to take time away from work to care for a same-sex spouse or domestic partner, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, is eligible for unpaid, job-protected leave. The other policy announced in 2015 was the new parental leave benefit, which includes same-sex spouses and domestic partners.

“I am proud of this achievement, as it recognizes the work of so many, as well as our continued focus on building a culture that embraces the unique differences that make Humana strong,” Tim said. “We will continue to focus on celebrating the perspective of every heartbeat in our company by inspiring all associates to continue to embrace our culture and our values.”

Tim is a Co-Executive Sponsor for Humana’s Pride LGBT Network Resource Group, made up of associates who are committed to shaping an inclusive world – in and outside of Humana – where all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, are celebrated and treated equally. They are a voluntary, self-driven group of LGBT and allied associates from across the organization.

Humana has several Network Resource Groups, all associate-led and associate-driven organizations open to everyone across the company. These groups exist to provide valuable insights to company leadership on strategic business initiatives, which will improve Humana’s inclusive culture and outreach to diverse communities.

In addition to the LGBT NRG, Humana’s NRGs also include groups for African-Americans, Hispanics, caregivers, military veterans, women, and Asian & Pacific Islanders.

Through our NRGs, Humana is engaging and empowering all of our associates. We strive to create an inclusive culture, where our associates feel welcome and safe to be their true selves.
