Recognizing the severe toll Hurricane Maria has taken on Puerto Rico communities already distressed following Hurricane Irma, Humana has initiated a series of disaster relief efforts to assist its members, employees and Puerto Rico communities.

In addition, the Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Humana, announced it will provide a $250,000 immediate grant to the American Red Cross to help the nonprofit organization deliver vital services, including food, shelter and related disaster relief, to Puerto Ricans affected by Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

“It’s important to Humana that our employees, health plan members and the people of Puerto Rico know we are concerned for their health and well-being,” said Humana President and CEO Bruce Broussard. “We cannot underestimate the long-term toll of multiple severe storms like Maria and Irma, and we are delegating resources and putting in place measures to help people during the recovery period.”

Among those measures, Humana has opened its toll-free crisis intervention hotline and counseling services beyond employees and members to include any individual who may need assistance in areas impacted by Maria and Irma. Counselors and work/life specialists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-866-440-6556 to provide free, confidential assistance to anyone needing help and support in coping with the disaster and its aftermath. Assistance is available in both English and Spanish.

Humana has also taken these additional steps:

  • For all affected members, Humana has suspended referrals and prior authorization requirements for acute, post-acute, outpatient and physician services
  • Humana is providing affected members who need to seek care out-of-network in Puerto Rico with the same benefits they would get from an in-network health care provider or facility
  • Humana health plan members in affected areas who have prescription coverage can obtain early refills of their medications without authorization from their physicians or Humana

“We recognize the severe impact that the recent hurricanes have had on so many fellow Puerto Ricans, including our members, employees, health care provider partners, brokers and employer clients, who are in need of our resources and support,” said Earl Harper, regional president of Medicare for Humana in Puerto Rico. “We want them to know that we will work tirelessly to support them at this critical time.”

Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm, leaving widespread destruction and knocking out power to most of the island, which was still reeling from damage and power outages caused by Hurricane Irma earlier this month.

The American Red Cross, recipient of the Humana Foundation donation, is one of the organizations already mobilizing to offer disaster relief in Puerto Rico.

“We know there is much to be done to help Puerto Rico recover from these storms, and we hope this donation from the Humana Foundation will help provide quick relief to the people there,” said interim Humana Foundation Executive Director Pattie Dale Tye. “Our hearts go out to the island residents who have endured so much in recent days.”

Humana’s workplace well-being efforts top national rankingHumana has earned Gold status in the American Heart Association’s Workplace Health Achievement Index, placing the company’s comprehensive workplace health efforts among the best in the nation. The index scores companies in seven areas: leadership, engagement, programs, policies and environment, partnerships, communications, and reporting outcomes.

Humana focuses on whole-person well-being, aiming to improve every employee’s sense of purpose, health, belonging and security to build a thriving workforce over the long term. The company has seen positive trends, including:

  • Healthier Days: Humana’s employee population has seen an improvement in mental and physical health as measured by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Healthy Days. The number of unhealthy days in a given 30-day period went from 5.6 in 2014 to 5.2 in 2016.
  • Declining risk: Employees with Humana since 2012 have fewer health risks on average than three years ago, with 7 out of 10 people either sustaining or improving their health risk profile. The percentage of employees who had elevated blood pressure declined by 33 percent from 2012 to 2016.

The Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), announced today it will provide initial support through a $1 million grant to the American Red Cross to help the nonprofit organization deliver vital services, including health services, to those affected by Hurricane Irma.

In addition, Humana Inc. announced that the company will match storm relief donations by its employees.

Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, has caused widespread damage across parts of Florida and is projected to spread to other states as its makes its way north. The American Red Cross is one of the organizations that is mobilizing and preparing to mount a massive relief effort in Florida and other affected communities.

Humana is making progress toward its corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals tied to the company’s three CSR pillars: Healthy People, Healthy Planet and Healthy Performance, according to the company’s 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility Progress Report.

Since the start of 2016, Humana and its associates have moved ahead in each of the focus areas. For instance, the company’s pursuit of its Bold Goal – to improve the health of the communities Humana serves 20 percent by 2020 – has resulted in more “Healthy Days” in all but one of several Bold Goal communities.

Humana’s new CSR Progress Report features many examples of how Humana is committed to living its values, particularly ‘Inspire Health.’ From the health metrics Humana tracks to make sure its members’ health is continually improving … to Humana Foundation commitments across the country to invest in community health, the report summarizes progress on the Healthy People front.

For example, Humana’s Pharmacy team in Phoenix served diabetes patients beyond Humana’s membership earlier this year by donating more than 4,500 pounds of diabetic supplies, including insulin syringes, pen needles and test strips, to Insulin for Life USA. In partnership with this organization, Humana delivered insulin and disease-management supplies free of charge to diabetes patients in developing countries, who otherwise would likely go without these life-saving provisions.

Regarding Humana’s overall environmental sustainability focus (Healthy Planet), the report details environmental goals established in 2014, progress to date toward achieving the goals, and how the company and its associates are as dedicated as they have ever been to limit the company’s environmental footprint.

On Humana’s Healthy Performance objectives – which address the company’s ethics and compliance, governance, and diversity and inclusion focus – the report includes a number of examples of Humana’s progress since the start of 2016, including the creation of a Physician Executive Immersion Program to create a cohort of leaders focused on improving how the company partners with physicians.

The report also summarizes the recognition Humana has received from multiple outside organizations as a leader not only among health insurers but in all of health care for its corporate citizenship efforts.
