Humana 2019 CSR Report highlights ways we support well-being

Humana recently released its 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report. In the report, Humana details its efforts to support the people and communities we serve in their pursuit of healthy and fulfilling lives.

“Every day, we gain a deeper understanding about what social health really means to our members and are reminded of the constant fragility and difficulty in achieving our goal,” said Bruce D. Broussard, Humana’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “It’s reinforced to us the importance of our integrated care delivery strategy, which at its core is about helping people achieve their ‘whole’ health and meeting them where they are in their own personal health journeys.”

Humana’s 2019 CSR Report highlights how the company is doing well by doing good:

For Each Person

  • Employee Health and Wellness: Forty-five percent of Humana teams showed well-being improvements from 2018 to 2019. To further encourage its employees to lead healthy lives, Humana co-created a 12-week immersive experience, JumpStart, to support employees in their fitness journeys and reported a five-pound average weight loss per participant for those active in the program.
  • Value-Based Care: By the end of 2019, two-thirds of Humana’s Medicare Advantage members were in value-based arrangements. Members in these arrangements received or experienced preventative screenings more often and had fewer emergency room visits and hospital admissions compared to patients in non-value-based arrangements.

For Each Community

  • Improving Access to Care: In 2019, Humana and the Black Health Care Coalition partnered to create the “More Healthy Days” Barbershop and Beauty Salon Tour in Kansas City, Mo., to target community members with limited access to care. The initiative provided them with health screenings and informational sessions inside their local barbershops and hair salons as a way to tackle barriers to care such as cost and accessibility.
  • The Humana Foundation: In 2019, The Humana Foundation invested $7.6 million in eight of Humana’s Bold Gold communities through its Strategic Community Investment Program.

For the Future

  • Environmental Goals: In 2019 Humana reached its goal of achieving 2.1 percent year-over-year decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from a 2017 baseline, reaching a 20.2 percent emissions reduction at the end of the year. At the end of 2019, Humana also exceeded its absolute target of 60 percent waste reduction by achieving a 63 percent waste diversion rate of waste to landfills through its reduction and recycling efforts.
  • Reducing Medical Waste: In 2019, Humana Pharmacy donated unused prescription medication to Mission of Mercy, a nonprofit organization providing free healthcare, dental care and prescription medications to the uninsured and underinsured. Humana Pharmacy also donated unused prescription medication from its mail-order delivery facility in Phoenix, Ariz., that would otherwise be discarded as medical waste, to multiple nonprofits.
