Dr. William Shrank, Humana’s Chief Medical Officer, recently spoke with members of the media — including Becker’s Hospital Review and Home Health Care News – about the future of health care and Humana’s strategy for integrated care delivery.

He told Becker’s that Humana wants to simplify care and meet members where they are – at home.

“If you look at the movie industry, you see there was a time when people used to go to the retail outlet to buy or rent their DVDs, and now there’s a better service that’s more convenient. It’s more personalized in the home,” Dr. Shrank said. “That’s our goal. Our goal is to be that more progressive solution that is patient-focused, convenient, integrated and meets patients where they are.”

Becker’s wrote, “For Humana, this means better leveraging data, technology and analytics to be proactive, and reaching out to patients before medical issues arise to provide appropriate services…”

Dr. Shrank also spoke with Home Health Care News, saying communication, culture and data are key to improving care.

“The thing that really attracted me to Humana is this model that integrates the payer and the provider around a member and the home,” Dr Shrank said. “A lot of the work that I had been doing leading up to this was around understanding how payer and provider integrate, how they partner.”

In addition, Hospice News reported after an interview with Dr. Shrank that “a forthcoming hospice carve-in for Medicare Advantage plans will help provide seamless transitions to hospice from other care settings such as home health care or hospitals.”
